Is the Litter-Robot 4 Worth Buying at Costco?

Costco’s Litter-Robot 4 listing, item #1292242, sells for $699.99 [s1]. Whisker sells the same box on its own site for $699 [s2]. The dollar between those two numbers is misleading, because the two cartons do not hold the same things.

The Costco carton adds a ramp, a litter mat, a set of odor cartridges, 25 waste drawer liners and three years of extended warranty coverage [s1]. Buying that list from Whisker afterwards runs about $270 [s3][s5]. For a dollar over the bare-unit price, that is a better carton than anything Whisker sells directly.

What you give up is the 90-day home trial, which Whisker runs only on its own storefronts [s4]. Costco’s guarantee stands in its place, and the warranty needs one step from you that a direct purchase does not.

What Costco sells

Item #1292242 is listed as the Whisker Litter-Robot 4 Self-Cleaning Bundle at $699.99, reduced from $759.99 [s1]. Inside: the unit, the fence and ramp, a LitterTrap mat, a six-pack of OdorTrap cartridges with the holder they sit in, 25 waste drawer liners, and three years of WhiskerCare [s1].

Costco carries more than one Litter-Robot bundle and the contents vary between them. Check the item number on the shelf tag against the accessory list before assuming this one applies.

The Litter-Robot listings tracked at Costco are Litter-Robot 4 bundles, alongside a Litter-Robot 3 Connect bundle that last sold at $299.97 and is now out of stock at every tracked location [s8]. For the Litter-Robot 5, Whisker’s own site is the channel, at $799 [s9].

What the bundle is worth

The base Litter-Robot 4 ships with a fence, a step, a carbon filter and five waste drawer liners [s2]. Everything past that in the Costco box is an accessory Whisker sells separately:

What Costco addsWhisker’s own price
Litter-Robot 4 Ramp$65 [s3]
LitterTrap mat$50 [s3]
OdorTrap holder and cartridgesfrom $45 [s3]
25 waste drawer linersfrom $12 [s3]
WhiskerCare 3-year extended warranty$100 [s5]

That comes to roughly $270 on top of a box Whisker prices at $699 bare [s2]. Costco asks $699.99.

Whisker sells the same box with extended coverage for $799 [s2]. Costco’s carton carries the same three years, adds the ramp, mat, cartridges and liners, and comes in at $699.99 [s1]. Whisker’s Starter and Insights bundles sit higher still, at $859 and $878 [s2].

What happens to returns

Whisker gives you 90 days to return a Litter-Robot for a full refund, and the policy names the three sites it applies to: Whisker.com, Litter-Robot.com and Litterbox.com [s4]. Buy the box anywhere else and you “must coordinate the return directly with that retailer,” in Whisker’s own words [s4].

The trial carries costs of its own. Whisker charges $60 for a return shipping label, deducted from the refund, and can take another $75 if the unit comes back dirty [s4].

Costco’s guarantee has no stated time limit on this category. Its policy caps returns at 90 days for a specific list of goods: televisions, projectors, major appliances, computers, tablets, smart wearables, cameras, drones, camcorders, MP3 players and cellphones [s6]. A litter box appears nowhere on that list, so it falls under the open-ended satisfaction guarantee. You also carry it back to a warehouse instead of paying to ship it.

Activating the warranty

A Litter-Robot bought from Costco is covered by WhiskerCare once you switch the coverage on yourself. Whisker’s policy is that “robot purchases made externally will require manual WhiskerCare Warranty activation before claims can be made” [s5]. Activation means emailing [email protected] with your receipt attached.

Do it the week the box arrives, while you can still find the receipt. Coverage you never activated pays nothing when the motor fails.

Finding one is the hard part

Stock is the real obstacle. A tracker following item #1292242 across 591 warehouses recorded 13 with stock, 42 running low and 536 out on July 26 [s1].

The item moves in and out on promotion rather than sitting as a permanent line, which is why the price carries a strike-through. Call your warehouse before driving out.

Does the membership pay for itself

A Gold Star membership runs $65 a year and Executive runs $130, which is the $65 base plus a $65 upgrade [s7]. Executive members earn a 2% annual reward on qualifying purchases [s7].

If you are joining purely to buy this box, add the $65 to the price and you are at $764.99 against $699 for the bare unit direct. You pay about $66 more and take home roughly $270 of accessories and three years of coverage. Measured against the closest thing Whisker sells, its $799 warranty bundle, the Costco route still lands lower with more in the carton [s2].

Existing members drop that $65 from the arithmetic, and the gap widens.

Where to buy it

Buy it at Costco if you are a member and your warehouse has one. It is more box for the money than anything Whisker sells directly, and the return path is more forgiving. Activate the warranty the week it arrives.

Whisker’s own store is the better choice if you want the 90-day trial, and specifically if you are not yet sure the cat will use it. That trial is what the extra money buys, and for a first-time automatic-box buyer with a nervous cat it can be the right purchase.

Amazon sits in between, at the same $699 with no trial and no accessories. It is the fallback when the warehouse shelf is empty, which it usually is. Frequently asked questions

How much is the Litter-Robot 4 at Costco? Item #1292242 lists at $699.99, marked down from $759.99 [s1]. Costco runs this item on and off promotion and prices differ between the warehouse and the website, so treat any figure as a starting point and check the shelf tag.

Is the Costco Litter-Robot the same machine as the one Whisker sells? Yes. It is a Litter-Robot 4 with accessories and a three-year warranty packed around it [s1]. The unit is not a different or lesser model.

Do you keep the 90-day trial if you buy at Costco? No. Whisker limits that window to purchases from its own three websites and directs third-party buyers back to the retailer they bought from [s4]. Costco’s satisfaction guarantee applies instead, and this category is not on its 90-day list [s6].

Does the warranty still work? It does, after you activate it. Whisker requires manual WhiskerCare activation on units bought outside its stores before any claim [s5]. Email [email protected] with the receipt.

Does Costco sell the Litter-Robot 5? Not as of this writing. The Litter-Robot listings tracked at Costco are Litter-Robot 4 bundles and a discontinued Litter-Robot 3 [s1][s8]. Whisker sells the 5 on its own site for $799 [s9].

Is it cheaper to buy the accessories separately later? No. The ramp, mat, cartridges and liners come to about $170 at Whisker’s prices before the warranty, and the warranty alone is $100 [s3][s5]. The bundle costs a dollar more than the bare unit.
