The Best Litter for the Litter-Robot 4 (and What to Avoid)

By Automatic Pet Litter Boxes Editorial Updated

A tabby cat sitting on a tiled floor in a bright, modern home

The Litter-Robot 4 is fussier about litter than an ordinary box. It sifts waste by turning a globe over a screen. A scale in the base weighs your cat, and an optical sensor reads the litter level [s2]. The wrong litter breaks one of those jobs. Clumps crumble and fall back through the screen. Dust settles on the sensor, or a pale litter throws off the level reading [s1][s2].

The box is not picky about brand, only about type. Almost any hard-clumping, low-dust clay works, and a couple of plant-based litters clump firmly enough to qualify [s1]. This guide covers five that do the job well, sorted by what you care about most, then lists the brands Whisker approves and rejects by name.

What the Litter-Robot 4 needs from a litter

Hard clumps come first. The globe tips litter across a screen, and whatever holds together drops into the drawer while loose grains fall back for the next cycle [s2]. A litter that clumps softly breaks apart on the way down and leaves waste in the bed. Clay with strong bentonite clumping handles this best, and the firmest plant litters manage it too [s1].

Dust is next. Fine dust settles on the globe’s sensor windows and the LowDust screen, and over weeks it can skew the litter-level reading [s1][s3]. A low-dust litter keeps the inside of the box cleaner and the sensor reading true.

Granule size sets how much litter reaches your floor. Heavier, larger grains stay in the box. The fine, light ones ride out on a cat’s paws [s3].

The LR4 judges litter level and drawer fullness by how the litter looks to an optical sensor. Translucent or white litter, the kind sold as crystals, can fool it into misreading both [s1]. Whisker calls this out for the LR4, the 5, and the EVO by name. Dark or natural-toned litter sidesteps it.

Odor control should work with the sealed drawer rather than against it. The LR4 locks waste in a carbon-filtered drawer [s2], so a litter that clumps fast and traps urine keeps smell down between empties. Whisker’s own guide argues that scented litter only masks odor, and that most cats prefer unscented [s1]. Firm, quick clumping is what holds odor.

Purina Tidy Cats Designed for Litter-Robot

Best overall. Purina and Whisker developed this litter together for the box, and it is the safest first choice for a Litter-Robot 4 [s4]. It is a hard-clumping clay tuned to the sifting cycle, so clumps keep their shape as the globe turns them into the drawer [s4]. Cats.com’s tester reported no sticking to the globe, though one commenter under the same review calls it “sticky mud” [s3]. In Cats.com’s per-pound comparison it costs less than GreatLitter or BoxiePro Deep Clean [s3].

The catch is the scent. The fragrance releases when the globe turns, and a cat or an owner who dislikes perfume will want to look elsewhere [s1][s4]. If a scented litter is a dealbreaker, the next pick solves it.

Dr. Elsey’s Ultra

The independent unscented pick. Dr. Elsey’s Ultra has a long record and no marketing tie to the box. It is unscented and close to dust-free, at the maker’s stated 99.9 percent [s5], and Whisker lists it as compatible [s1].

A reviewer who ranked six unscented clays after long use in a Litter-Robot put Dr. Elsey’s last, and it was the only one whose rubber base needed cleaning after a week [s8]. Nothing masks odor, so the drawer wants emptying on schedule.

BoxiePro Bot

Odor control without fragrance. BoxiePro Bot is the clumping clay Boxiecat makes for automatic litter boxes, with added probiotics and no added fragrance, and it is on Whisker’s list of litters that work in the Litter-Robot [s1][s9].

The independent testing we found covers its sibling, BoxiePro Deep Clean. Cats.com’s tester calls that probiotic clay one of the most popular picks among Litter-Robot owners [s3], and it ranked first of six unscented litters in the same long-term review, with the rubber base left very clean after a week [s8]. Bot itself has not been through either test, and that review ranked the maker’s Boxiecat Classic fifth of six, so one Boxiecat clay’s results do not settle another’s. Deep Clean costs more per pound than the Tidy Cats blend in Cats.com’s comparison [s3].

Fresh Step Clean Paws

Least tracking. Fresh Step Clean Paws is built around one problem, litter on the floor [s3]. Its grains are larger and shaped to fall off paws. The LR4’s open globe flings a little litter out on each cycle, and the heavier grains fall back instead of onto the floor [s3][s7]. Get the unscented low-dust version for the LR4, since it stays easy on the sensor [s7].

Cats.com’s tester found the clumps firm by the time the cycle ran and noticed no odor from the waste drawer. The tester’s one complaint was dust: it seemed a little dustier than other clays, which other buyers have reported too [s3]. If tracked litter across the floor is your main complaint, this is the litter that fixes it.

Sustainably Yours

Best natural. Most litters sold as natural fail in a Litter-Robot. Pine and paper pellets will not sift, and non-clumping plant litters leave waste behind [s1][s2]. Sustainably Yours is the exception, a corn-and-cassava litter that clumps hard enough to pass through the globe cleanly [s3][s6].

It costs more per pound than any clay in Cats.com’s comparison, so you get less litter for your money [s3]. Choose the large-grain version, which Whisker recommends for less tracking [s1][s6]. For an owner set on a plant-based litter, this is the one that holds up in the box.

What about Whisker’s GreatLitter?

GreatLitter is Whisker’s own litter, and it is the first one Whisker recommends for the Litter-Robot, alongside the Tidy Cats blend [s1]. It is a single-ingredient, unscented sodium bentonite clay, and Whisker says it will not stick to the liner [s1][s10]. In the long-term review, GreatLitter left the rubber base very clean after a week [s8].

Whisker sells it direct, in 20, 40 and 60 pound bags on subscription [s1], and it costs more per pound than the Tidy Cats blend [s3]. We rank the Tidy Cats blend above it because the same maker endorses both and the Tidy Cats blend costs less.

When clumps stick to the globe

Waste stuck to the rubber base of the globe is the problem that fills the comments under the most detailed Litter-Robot litter test we found [s8]. The two causes you control are how firmly the litter clumps and how long the box waits before it cycles.

The first is the litter. In that review’s week-long check, GreatLitter, BoxiePro Deep Clean and Ever Clean Extra Strength kept the base very clean, while Dr. Elsey’s needed cleaning and Scoop Away Multi-Cat was rated dusty and sticky [s8].

The second is the delay timer. The LR4 lets you set the wait after your cat leaves at 3, 7, 15, 25 or 30 minutes [s1]. Whisker says a firm clumping litter sets fast enough for the 3-minute setting [s1]. Owners report the problem from both ends. One commenter found waste smeared at 3 to 7 minutes until the delay went up, while the reviewer, who runs a 7-minute delay, finds clumps turn gluey and stick at 15 [s8]. Lengthen the delay if waste smears. Glued clumps suggest a delay long enough for them to turn soft, so shorten it or try a firmer litter.

How much litter you will go through

Whisker’s guide for its own GreatLitter is one 20-pound bag a month for one cat, two bags a month for two to four cats, and three bags every two months for five or more [s10]. Whisker also claims a self-cleaning box uses up to half the litter of a scooped one; that figure is the maker’s own [s10].

In a multi-cat home the level drops faster between top-ups, so keeping the bed at the fill line takes more attention. Whisker’s LitterHopper refills the globe on its own, holding 13 to 17 cups [s1]. It is sold separately, or packed into Costco’s larger Litter-Robot 4 bundle.

Cats.com names World’s Best as its pick for multiple cats [s3]. We would not follow it, for the sensor-damage reports in Whisker’s table below [s1].

Litters to keep out of the globe

SkoonNot recommendedNon-clumping clay
Tuft & Paw Really Great Cat LitterNot recommendedA tofu litter that will not sift
Paco and Pepper Olive PitsNot recommendedMay stick to the liner and leave residue

Pellets are the clearest thing to skip. Wood and paper pellets are too big to fall through the screen, so they never sift into the drawer [s1]. Crystal and silica litters fail in a different way. Their pale, translucent color confuses the level and drawer sensors [s1].

World’s Best is the one to think twice about. It is a corn litter that clumps well, and Cats.com recommends it for multi-cat homes [s3]. Whisker’s own table ties it to stronger odor, damage to the drawer-full and pinch sensors, and mold and pest problems [s1]. On a $700 machine, that split between a review site and the maker is reason enough to pick a litter nobody flags.

Getting the litter right in the box

Fill the globe to the line molded on the inside, or a little under [s1][s2]. Pour in too much and the box reads full before the drawer is, which cuts cycles short.

Whisker says most cats switch litter right away, and suggests mixing the new one in gradually when the Litter-Robot is also the cat’s first automatic box [s10].

Scent is a matter of taste, the cat’s more than yours. A scented litter like the Tidy Cats blend covers odor between empties, but a cat that dislikes the smell may avoid the box [s3]. When you are unsure, unscented is the safer choice.

Frequently asked questions

Can you use any clumping litter in the Litter-Robot 4? Almost. The box takes nearly any hard-clumping clay or scoopable litter, plus a few plant-based litters that clump firmly [s1][s2]. It does not take pellet or non-clumping litters, which fail to sift, or light crystal litters, which interfere with the sensors [s1].

What litter does Whisker recommend for the Litter-Robot? Whisker points owners to its own GreatLitter and to the Purina Tidy Cats litter it co-developed for the box [s1][s4]. Both clump hard and suit the cycle. Independent favorites such as Dr. Elsey’s Ultra work too [s1].

Which litter is least likely to stick to the Litter-Robot 4? In one reviewer’s week-long check, GreatLitter, BoxiePro Deep Clean and Ever Clean Extra Strength left the globe’s rubber base very clean, and Dr. Elsey’s Ultra was the unscented litter that needed cleaning [s8]. The delay timer matters as much as the brand: see the section on clumps sticking above.

Can you use Pretty Litter in the Litter-Robot 4? No. Whisker rates Pretty Litter as working in the Litter-Robot 3 only. In the 4, the 5 and the EVO its translucent crystals throw off the litter-level and drawer readings [s1].

Is crystal litter safe for the Litter-Robot 4? Generally no. Whisker warns that translucent or white crystal litter can throw off the LR4’s litter-level and drawer readings, because the sensor goes by how the litter looks [s1]. Stick with dark or natural-toned clumping litter.

Can I use a natural or plant-based litter? Some of them. Most natural litters are pellets or non-clumping, and those will not sift [s1]. A firm-clumping plant litter like Sustainably Yours is the exception and works well, though it costs more than clay [s3][s6].

Is clumping litter safe for a kitten? Whisker advises care with very young kittens, which sometimes eat litter. Clumping clay can expand in a kitten’s stomach, so Whisker suggests a non-clumping or plant-based litter until the kitten is several months old [s10].

How much litter does the Litter-Robot 4 need? Fill the globe to the line molded on the inside, or slightly below [s1][s2]. Overfilling makes the box report full too soon; skimp and clumps stick to the bottom of the globe.

Can the wrong litter damage the box? It can. Pellet and non-clumping litters jam the sifting cycle, and Whisker links World’s Best to damage to the drawer-full and pinch sensors [s1]. Matching the litter to the box protects a $700 machine.

What to buy

For most Litter-Robot 4 owners the Purina Tidy Cats litter built for the box is the simplest right answer. Dr. Elsey’s Ultra is the one to buy if you would rather skip the scent and the branding, and BoxiePro Bot if you want a fragrance-free clay built for automatic boxes [s1][s4][s9]. Keep pellets and crystals out of the globe, fill to the line, and the box handles the rest.
