Will a Litter-Robot Fit That Cabinet? Three Numbers
By Automatic Pet Litter Boxes Editorial
Every cabinet listing that mentions the Litter-Robot gives you a compatibility list. Almost none of them give you an interior depth. That ordering is backwards, because the compatibility list is the half you cannot verify.
The Litter-Robot 4’s own dimensions are easy to find. The unit is 22 inches wide, 27 inches deep and 29.5 inches tall [s1]. What Whisker does not publish anywhere on that page, or on its cross-model comparison chart [s2], is how much room the machine needs around itself. Those are different numbers, and the second one is what a cabinet has to satisfy.
The three numbers
Interior depth. Sellers lead with width, and interior depth is the figure that decides whether the machine goes in at all. A Litter-Robot 4 is 27 inches from front to back [s1]. Compare that against a cabinet’s stated interior depth rather than its exterior, and treat a listing that publishes only exterior dimensions as an unanswered question.
Interior height, measured against your model rather than the family. The Litter-Robot 4 stands 29.5 inches tall. The Litter-Robot 5 and 5 Pro share the 4’s 22 by 27 inch footprint but stand 29.9 inches [s2]. Four tenths of an inch sounds like nothing until a cabinet was cut to 29.75 inches of clearance, at which point the 4 fits and its successor does not. If there is any chance of upgrading, size for the taller machine now.
Drawer clearance, which nobody publishes. The waste drawer has to come out for you to empty it, and it comes out toward the front face. A cabinet can clear the machine on all three axes and still trap the drawer against a wall or a shelf lip. No manufacturer states this figure, so it is the one you have to take with a tape measure.
The models are not interchangeable
| Model | Footprint | Height | Step height | Cat weight range |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Litter-Robot 4 | 22” x 27” | 29.5” | 6.9” | 3-25 lbs |
| Litter-Robot 5 | 22” x 27” | 29.9” | 7” | 3-30 lbs |
| Litter-Robot 5 Pro | 22” x 27” | 29.9” | 7” | 3-30 lbs |
| Litter-Robot EVO | 20.6” x 24.3” | 27.6” | 5.6” | 3-19 lbs |
All figures from Whisker’s comparison chart [s2].
The EVO is the outlier. It is roughly an inch and a half narrower, two and a half inches shallower and two inches shorter than the 4. A cabinet advertised as fitting “the Litter-Robot” and built around EVO measurements will not take a 4 or a 5. The phrase covers four machines with three different footprints.
Where a compatibility list breaks down
The Refined Feline sells a self-cleaning litter box cabinet at $220 to $250 and lists its interior as 28.5 inches wide, 32.5 inches high and 26.5 inches deep. Its compatibility list names the Litter Robot 3, Litter Robot 4 and Litter Robot 5 among others [s3].
Set that interior depth of 26.5 inches beside the Litter-Robot 4’s depth of 27 inches. On the published numbers the machine is half an inch deeper than the space it is advertised to fit.
An owner review on the same page complicates that arithmetic, and the complication is the useful part. Writing in June 2025, Debbie Culver says “I have the Litter Robot 4 and it fits well inside the Refined Feline enclosure, but you can’t pull the waste drawer out of the robot, because of the ledge on the enclosure” [s3]. So the machine goes in. One of those two published depth figures is measured differently than a buyer would assume, which is the first reason to treat any compatibility list as a starting point rather than an answer.
The failure she hit is the one no specification sheet describes. The same review notes that “the robot sits lower than that ledge” and suggests the cabinet needs “a raised base at the same height of that ledge” [s3]. The unit fits the box and the drawer still cannot open, because drawer clearance is a vertical relationship between the machine’s base and the cabinet’s interior lip. Neither figure is published by anyone.
The cabinet itself is fine. What fails is the compatibility list, which answers a narrower question than the one buyers are asking.
Whisker’s own cabinet
Whisker sells one, a Coffee Oak Storage Cabinet described as designed “specifically with the Litter-Robot 4 dimensions in mind” [s4]. It is out of stock, and the page publishes no interior dimensions at all.
So the vendor best placed to state the clearance its own machine needs publishes no numbers for the one product that would show it. Whisker’s dimensions support article renders its measurements as images rather than text [s5], which is a small thing until you are standing in a room trying to compare them to a listing.
What to measure before you buy
Three measurements settle it, each compared against the cabinet’s published interior.
Measure your machine’s depth, then confirm the cabinet’s interior depth exceeds it. If the seller publishes only exterior dimensions, ask for the interior figure and treat its absence as a no.
The waste drawer needs its own allowance. Pull yours all the way out, measure how far it travels, and add that to the depth if the drawer will face the cabinet’s front, or to the width if the machine goes in sideways.
Height is the measurement to take against the model you might own in two years rather than the one you own now. The 0.4 inch step from the 4 to the 5 is the cheapest mistake on this page to avoid.
Clear all three and the compatibility list becomes a confirmation rather than a promise.
FAQ
Does the Litter-Robot 4 fit in a standard litter box cabinet? Usually not without checking. Most litter box furniture is built for a covered pan roughly 20 inches deep. The Litter-Robot 4 is 27 inches deep [s1].
Will a cabinet built for a Litter-Robot 4 fit a Litter-Robot 5? Only if it has 29.9 inches of interior height or more. The two share a footprint, and the 5 is 0.4 inches taller [s2].
Does an enclosure make the Litter-Robot smell worse? Enclosing any litter box reduces airflow around it. The Refined Feline cabinet addresses this with “rear ventilation slots” that it says “improve airflow and fit carbon odor filters” [s3]. Whether a given cabinet does anything comparable is worth confirming before purchase.
Can I still empty the waste drawer with the machine inside a cabinet? That depends entirely on drawer clearance, which no manufacturer publishes. Measure the drawer’s full travel and compare it to the space in front of the machine’s front face.
Is the EVO the same size as the Litter-Robot 4? No. The EVO is 20.6 by 24.3 inches with a height of 27.6 inches, smaller than the 4 on every axis [s2].
